01
Introduction.
Project Overview

The JFE Shoji Group has offices in Japan and overseas and is characterized by customer-oriented business development and global business promotion. The number of operating companies is approximately 100. Approximately 9,000 employees are active in their respective positions on a consolidated basis. Among them, not a few of them joined our company with the goal of "working overseas. One such person is Kikuchi, who currently serves as the head of the Automotive Steel Trade Department at the head office.

He has been working in the field both in Japan and overseas, and in 2019, he will become president of the Vietnam business company. He says, "Even though I was not assigned to my ideal workplace at first, I never lost sight of my goal and continued to give my all to the work in front of me, and that's how I arrived there." We would like to introduce his career path at JFE Shoji.

02
About the project
With the desire to "work overseas," he began his career as a regional sales representative.

Since I was a student, I had a strong desire to work overseas and wanted to join a trading company where I could work globally.
I decided to join JFE Shoji Trade because of its focus on overseas business since that time and the professional and proud attitude toward steel of the employees I met during my recruitment activities.

After joining the company, I was assigned to the sales department of a regional branch that handled miscellaneous steel varieties, and in my fourth year, I was transferred to the Osaka branch because "it would broaden the scope of my work. While experiencing new jobs one after another, he always kept his eyes open for an opportunity to be stationed overseas. The turning point came at the age of 33. It was an experience at a coil center (steel processing plant) in Kobe, to which he was transferred. A company had been attracted to and acquired within the plant, and I was given the responsibility of effectively managing the operations of the president of the company. Compared to my previous duties, I became more involved in the field. It was a time when I experienced the entire process of talking directly with people in the field, processing, and delivering the products to customers, and I felt a great sense of responsibility and satisfaction that I had never felt before.

03
Role in the project
Paving the way to management

My boss at the time pushed me to "think of myself as the president of the company," and even though I was a sales representative, I was in charge of all management-related tasks, including labor management, environmental management, taxation, and cash management. Of course, I had no specialized knowledge or experience, so I studied on my own at the library on weekends and learned from veteran employees who were experts. Later, as a young sales representative in charge of thin plate sales at the Osaka branch office, I was transferred to a department where I was able to both practice trade and be transferred overseas, and a year later I was assigned to a coil center in Thailand.

A year later, I was assigned to a coil center in Thailand. While overseeing the sales department, I honed my onsite sense and knowledge. During this period, I saw the activities of my former boss, who was the youngest president of a business company in Japan, and this gave me a new aspiration to become president at an even younger age. These achievements were highly regarded and led to the realization of my dream of finally becoming the president of an overseas (Vietnam) operating company in 2019.

How the project was
resolved
Overcoming the adversity of the Corona disaster,
achieved business expansion and maintained profitability.

When I became president of JFE Shoji, Vietnam was at a time when companies from all over the world were accelerating their entry into the country due to the "China plus one" policy. I focused on building a new structure by expanding business with multinational customers and investing in facilities to differentiate ourselves from our competitors, and contributed to achieving the highest profit since the company's establishment. However, the following year, the company faced unprecedented circumstances, including a lockdown due to the Corona disaster.

There were no admi general affairs or technical staff on the expatriate staff, and only two people on site: myself, the president, and the sales section manager. Driven by a sense of mission to protect the livelihood of our 120 local staff and their families, we were in a constant battle to secure vaccines under the lockdown, negotiate with the government for permission to operate the plant, and deal with deteriorating earnings and bad debts due to the Corona recession. Although I had never experienced such a series of events before, I consulted with the head office, business partners, and everyone else I could think of to find the best solution to a situation for which there was no answer, keeping in mind the policy that every decision I made had to be based on my own conviction. As a result of overcoming numerous challenges with trusted staff members, we were able to expand our business and maintain profitability during the five years of my assignment, despite the impact of Corona.

05
The project made me feel
what JFE Shoji's character is
We do not abandon people of integrity. A corporate culture that allows employees to take on challenges with colleagues from around the world

At JFE Shoji, there are people all over the world who will work with you to find a solution, no matter how difficult the situation.
I myself have trusted colleagues, seniors, juniors, and overseas local staff, and I have overcome many challenges with the support of people in the business community. In my work, there are mistakes, but the important thing is not to repeat the same mistakes. Of course, there are times when we are given strict guidance, but I feel that our corporate culture, which does not abandon people with integrity, continues to produce people who are willing to take on challenges.

And as a specialized trading company, we have an environment in which we can aim to become steel professionals, and we offer diverse career paths and growth opportunities. Steel products themselves are a field in which differentiation is difficult, but only our company has on-site capabilities in all areas from procurement of raw materials to processing, distribution, and sales, and our customer base is broad. Furthermore, because of the large size of the group, there are many positions available both in Japan and overseas, and depending on your will, aptitude, and performance, you may be able to aim for a management position in an operating company in the future.

06
What kind of person is suited for the project?
People who can collaborate and create with others toward their goals will shine.

I think that people with a human touch, bright and positive, even if they are rough around the edges, are suited for this job. In the course of your work, there will be times when you will have to compete on your own human ability. At that time, if you have an attractive personality even if you are a little clumsy, and if you have a hard work ethic toward your work, you will be able to grow. JFE Shoji is the place where that environment and human relationships exist.

I consider myself an ordinary person, but ever since I joined JFE Shoji, I have publicly stated that I want to go overseas, and I have been constantly exploring what I want to achieve next as I take on new challenges. I have always thought about how I and my colleagues can work in a cheerful, enjoyable, and positive manner, and this has led to my management skills to build trust as a leader. I believe that people who have their own goals and can tackle the work in front of them while respecting their own sensibilities are the ones who can be successful at JFE Shoji.
